New Yes Day

January is the perfect month to fulfill your new resolution to say "yes" more!

Say yes to ice skating on the rooftop plaza of Whole Foods! Open from 9-9pm until January 15th. The cost is $10 per hour with skate rental. Stop by on Wednesdays for Disco Karaoke on ice with free hot chocolate, or on Thursdays for live music.

Need a little dance party? Tom and Gary's Decentralized Dance Party: Austin has you covered. Basically, it's a bunch of people parading around town with boomboxes and having a freaking good time. Check out those videos! Follow the Facebook event page to find out the starting location. Party begins this Saturday night at 8pm!

Need a little more dance party in your life? Austin's Free Day of Dance is back again this year. Take free dance lessons all over the city at various locations, January 21st!

How can you say no to an Anchorman Quote-Along at the Drafthouse? Tickets are selling out fast, so grab yours as soon as possible!  Perhaps you'd rather say yes to Spice World. You know, that Spice Girls movie from 1997. Yeah, I owned it on VHS. And now, the Ritz is gonna heckle the hell out of it on January 15th!

I said yes to the interactive, performed-in-the-round Santaland Diaries at Zach Theatre last week, and you should too. Martin Burke and Meredith McCall crack audiences up the entire show with true experiences from David Sedaris' book Holidays on Ice. I overheard more than one happy patron stating "worth it, totally worth it!" So you really shouldn't miss it! If you're a student: check in about an hour before the show for a discounted ticket. The show ends on the 8th of January, but returns yearly if you can't catch it this time.

Say yes to sharing your story. For the month of January, KUT and the Bob Bullock bring you StoryCorps, a nonprofit organization that allows Americans to record and preserve their stories. Donations are accepted, and you can sign up now online or over the phone. The StoryCorps air-stream trailer is currently set up outside of the museum and they want to hear from you!

The Bob Bullock will be open this Saturday for free from 2-6pm. Kids can check out story time and activities and you can explore the museum's exhibitions, including mine, Texas High School Football: More than the Game!

I'm saying yes to being vegan again (day 3, woo!!!), and lucky me, The Brixton is hosting a vegan & gluten-free brunch on the 15th, brought to you by GreenIsland. Prepay online to reserve a plate and stop in from 12-2pm on Sunday.

If "get fit" is also on your resolution list this year - you can do that! GetFit! 2012 is happening January 15th at Ballet Austin from 3-6pm. Check out various classes ranging from Arms & Abs to Zumba for free!

For all you stir-crazy parents waiting for school to be back in session, bring the kiddos to The Mutt-Cracker, playing this weekend at The Vortex. This Austin-based family friendly circus and dog show has been featured on David Letterman and Pet Star, so it should be worth checking out!

You can also keep the kiddies busy with Young Ambassador's Storytime at the French Legation Museum. The club meets every first and third Thursday morning. Children can engage in story-related activities and receive a badge for doing so.

For those with teenagers, Inner Diva Studios is offering a co-ed teen Hip Hop night on the 20th of January. I'm putting my hair in pigtails and totally sneaking into this one!

And because you ain't nothin' but a hound dog, you can celebrate Elvis' birthday in style! The Blue Starlite Drive-In is hosting a double-feature of the King of the big screen. Check it out this Saturday, starting at 7pm! Can't get enough of the double-feature? Me either. Starlite is keeping up with the theme all month long with Alfred Hitchcock, James Bond, and a crazy triple-feature of 80's teen movies. Amazing.

The Continental Club will also be hosting an all-ages Elvis tribute show Saturday afternoon, and a later evening show at 6:30pm.

Get your eyes off the internet and into the stars. Stop by UT on Wednesday nights for free star parties while school is in session. You can also set your eyes on some nature, because during the month of January, the Wildflower Center is offering free admission!

For the bike enthusiast in you, check out FrankenBike, a free local bike swap/meet up with the coolest name ever. This month's meet up is at The Parlor on the 28th, and will be offering free tune-ups for FrankenBabes. Stop by anytime from 10-5pm, for live music, a full bar, pizza (with vegan options!), and bike and bike-part swappin'.

All this awesome in just the first month of the year? I think Austin is off to a wonderful start in 2012!
